Celebrities, Gossip, and Entertainment: “Reality TV- Whose Fault is it Anyway?”

Usually trends fade, but this Reality TV ordeal is just getting bigger and bigger, and with the billion dollar industry, an end is nowhere in sight. From Real World, Flavor of Love, I love New York to the most recent shows Basketball Wives, Mob Wives, The Real Housewives of Atlanta, Love & Hip Hop, Hollywood Exes, R&B Divas (coming soon), and the latest probably most degrading show The Mistresses of Atlanta (may or may not happen) they all have had some type of controversy, but the main people that criticize the shows may be the same ones keeping the shows on.

Whether we admit it or not, we all love drama, as long as it is not a part of our lives, but here lately we have been exposed to too much drama, if there is a such thing, but some say it wasn’t always ‘this bad.’ Back when Real World debuted in 1992, there were a lot of issues partly because the world may not have been ready to face certain issues such as AIDS, sexuality, and drug abuse. While some people disliked the show, many felt that the show was positive because it displayed the day-to- day issues that an average person may face, and how he/she dealt with them.
Now in 2012, we do not see many people tackling life changing issues, but more so shallow and vain issues. Now bottles are being thrown over comments, people are punched over disagreements, and now women are taking pride in sleeping with someone else’s man. Do we see more negativity because times have changed? Or is it the producers doing anything to make money? The negative behavior of these women, particularly black women, feed into the stereotype that many of us try to escape, which is black women are a bunch of hand clapping, neck rolling, loud talking, tactless individuals that do not know how to act.
Although good people do bad things at times, many feel that what is aired on TV is too much bad and not enough good. However, when somewhat of a positive show, Hollywood Exes, aired many people stated they were bored. One may assume that this is because there wasn’t drama or anybody talking with a ghetto dialect. Now, if we say we are bored because of this, but disliked what was shown on BBW, where do we draw the line?
These shows cannot thrive without high ratings. The more people watch, the more people will continue to make the shows. If you are watching, why complain? Some say it is like a train wreck; you know what is about to happen, you see the disaster but you cannot turn your head.
According to Reality TV Index, there are more than fifty reality shows, and more are still in the works. At the end of the day it is about money. While we like to be entertained, is there a thing as too much? Some feel that there are some positive shows, while others feel that there are not enough. At the end of the day, someone is responsible for allowing this to happen. Are you?
